Erudycję humanistyczną autor definiuje, zgodnie z tradycją sięgającą Cycerona, podtrzymywaną w renesansie i XVII w., jako wiedzę z zakresu studiorum humanitatis i odniesienie do kultury antyku.
Takie przekonania pozwalały zachować składniki renesansowej kultury w szkolnictwie o humanistycznych podstawach: uniwersyteckim, jezuitów i innych zakonów.
Zmianie uległa funkcja erudycji: badanie dziedzictwa i filologiczna krytyka ustąpiły miejsca pragmatyzmowi.
... Wiesław Pawlak, Humanistic Erudition in the Religious Literature of the Seventeenth-Century
The study follows the "erudition as a testimony to […] the ‘long duration’ of the humanistic tradition" manifesting in religious literature (p. 224). Religious works are texts in which the sacred is present in larger semantic units, genre structures or in the global sense. The author defines humanistic erudition – in accordance with Cicero's tradition still present in the Renaissance and the seventeenth century – as knowledge in the field of studiorum humanitatis and references to the culture of antiquity. Erudition was a distinguishing feature of the humanist formation. Knowledge was to be subordinated to moral principles and, as post-Tridentine theorists wanted, subjected to selection and adaptation to express Christian meanings.
An early example of the compliance of this attitude with the thought of Church Fathers could be found in the arguments of Stanislaus Hosius, patron of the Counter-Reformation, in his letter to Piotr Tomicki that it pleased God to decorate temples with ‘spoils’ obtained on pagans. The limits of adaptation were determined by the content of truth in the classical heritage: what was true belonged to true faith. Such beliefs allowed to preserve the components of Renaissance culture in education with humanistic foundations: university education, Jesuit and other religious orders. Education spread the humanistic education, which proves the viability of tradition.
It is also confirmed by the great importance attributed to the Latin language. Latinitas became a component of Polish cultural identity, among others thanks to the Church, which testifies to the symbiosis of humanitas and christianitas. Polish religious literature in Latin had a long life. The use of language was often accompanied by an imitation of ancient patterns. The Renaissance requirement of the poet's comprehensive knowledge translated into a large presence of classical ornamentation in Baroque poetry. The programmatic emphasis on their inferiority to Christianity proves their submission to the requirements of religion, as does the combination of the classic heroic epic with the Christian tradition in the historical epic.
The universality of encyclopaedic compendia is evidenced by the book knowledge derived from them, which is distant from the studies of nature developing at that time. It connects with the humanistic topos of the book of nature, realized by preachers and poets. School theatre, especially Jesuit, also used classical and mythological relay. Treating history as the foundation of allegory is the humanistic mark of historical works, hagiography drew on the methodology of historiography and philology. An important area of Christianization of symbols and meanings of antiquity was also religious and secular emblematics.
The ubiquitous rhetoric, often considered the crown of education, played a huge role in spreading humanistic traditions. Intellectuals of the seventeenth century shared the faith of the Renaissance predecessors in its key role in education. You can even talk about the sacralisation of rhetoric.
More important than examples is the question about “the actual extent (depth) of erudition, its functions, […] the relationship between Christianitas and humanitas and the historical range of humanism" (p. 259). Although baroque erudition comes from other sources and is more selective, it proves high evaluation of many elements of humanistic culture. The function of erudition changed: the study of heritage and philological criticism gave way to pragmatism. The seventeenth-century erudition, however, had great potential for constituting a community based on cultural criteria. Humanism appears to be a long-lasting current, not limited to the Renaissance time frame and not conflicted with Christianity....
Dbałość o człowieka oznacza dbałość o filologiczne studia nad Pismem Świętym i Ojcami Kościoła. Dlatego humaniści (Erazm, Tomasz Morus, Coluccio Salutati, Lorenzo Valla, Marsilio Ficino, Pico della Mirandola) pragnęli je upowszechniać i uprzystępniać.
(3) W wychowaniu jednostki i relacjach społecznych Grecy dążyli do stworzenia czegoś skończonego, humanizm biblijny zakłada stawanie się tu i teraz, ciągłe próby.
Autor konstatuje brak opracowań recepcji Biblii w polskim renesansie.
In the opening part of his essay, the author enumerates studies devoted to biblical humanism and presents problems discussed by him: how he understands biblical humanism, what features he considers the most critical and requiring in-depth reflection.
Then the researcher recalls the opinion of Juliusz Domański about the vagueness of the term of humanism. He discusses the proposal of Martin Heidegger, who recognises humanism as a timeless concern for humanity, which should be detached from life, divinity and a metaphysical foundation – unlike in the Bible. The Biblical man does not want to be pure because he is looking for something beyond it, as Abraham Joshua Heschel argues. He chooses not abstract, static theorising, but rather the specificity, process and practice arising from the Bible. Erasmus of Rotterdam was of a similar opinion. Care for man comes from outside of himself – from God.
Under the term of “biblical humanism”, the author understands – after Martin Buber and Paul Ricoeur – the practice-proven turning of the individual towards values based on the Bible. Therefore, its text should be under special care. Caring for man means caring for philological studies of the Holy Scriptures and Church Fathers. That is why the humanists (Erasmus, Thomas More, Coluccio Salutati, Lorenzo Valla, Marsilio Ficino, Giovanni Pico della Mirandola) wanted to popularise these values and make available. It was to be done through humanistic studies, and their purpose was to apply them in the moral life.
The researcher juxtaposes three qualities of biblical humanism with classical Greek thought. (1) The meaning of the word in Greek antiquity is born from a sophisticated form, far from real speech, while in the Bible – from naturalness, directness, spoken language. (2) In the Greek world, monologue dominates, in the biblical one – it is dialogue, openness to the listener. (3) In the education of the individual and social relations, the Greeks strived to create something finite, while biblical humanism implies becoming here and now, continuous trials.
The author notes the lack of studies on the reception of the Bible in the Polish Renaissance. Particular attention is paid to the Psalms, although they are researched into, but only partially and insufficiently. As a context, he mentions European and Polish translations of the Psalter. He distinguishes two approaches: religious, connected with the development of the Polish literary language, and aesthetic, related to philological inquiries....
Wyróżnia go posiadanie rozumu i norm etycznych, które stanowią zarazem wyznacznik wyższej kultury.
Abstrakcyjna istota człowieczeństwa, natura ludzka to humanitas. Pojęcie to badaczka ilustruje wyjątkami z Seneki i Geliusza, wiążącego „ludzkość” z obyciem i życzliwością oraz wykształceniem, erudycją, odebraniem formacji intelektualnej.
W średniowiecznym widzeniu humanitas trwa jej widzenie antyczne: to natura ludzka, spełniona przede wszystkim w prawości i dobroci, obyciu oraz wykształceniu.
W ostatniej części tekstu badaczka analizuje rozumienie humanizmu w encyklopediach internetowych: różnojęzycznych wersjach Wikipedii i Stanford Encyclopedy of Philosophy. The present text is an analysis of the changes in the meaning of the term ‘humanism’ in the history of culture from the antiquity to the Renaissance and the present day. The material was taken from ancient and medieval Latin dictionaries and online encyclopaedias – their definitions were referred to the examples from sources. As the necessary context, the meanings of Polish and Latin words related to the term were analysed, especially homo and humanitas.
The author makes the lexeme homo in classical Latin as her starting point for reflection. She cites definitions from the Oxford Latin Dictionary, which she illustrates with quotes from Lucretius and Cicero. According to them, the man in the hierarchy of beings is situated below the gods and above the animals – this is the initial definition in thinking about man also in later times. Human beings are distinguished by the fact that they have the capacity for using reason and moral norms to guide their conduct.
The abstract essence of humanity – human nature – is humanitas. The researcher illustrates this concept with excerpts from Seneca and Gellius, who associate the “humanity” with manners and kindness, as well as education, erudition, and specific intellectual formation. Cicero also noted the relationship between human nature and education.
Next, the author, on the basis of the dictionary by A. Souther and the documents of general councils, discusses the changes in the meaning of the term homo after the birth of Christianity. These changes were related to disputes over the human nature of Christ and the divine nature of the Saviour, inaccessible to other mortals. Divinity is here more sharply separated from humanity than in the anthropology of pre-Christian antiquity. Jesus mediates between these two states as the only model of perfect humanitas unmatched by others.
As the analysis of entries in the medieval Latin dictionaries reveals, the term homo was often seen in reference to the community and hierarchized social relations. The hierarchy of beings was also developed, in relation to which the man was described. Attention was paid to his role in the work of Creation; human beings were thought of as a species, a creature composed of body and soul in dependence on other people. The medieval perception of humanitas was the continuation of its ancient vision: it was a human nature that fulfilled itself primarily in righteousness and goodness, cultivation and education. It is a potentiality that should be achieved – in the Middle Ages by belonging to a community. In the Renaissance, it was essential to learn how to use speech efficiently. This was related to the model of education of those times, focused on the knowledge of classical languages and ancient literature. There is no humanity beyond them, and national cultures – if they really were to be cultures – had to be modelled on antiquity.
In addition to exploring the secrets of poetry, grammar and rhetoric, the Renaissance humanist had to train memory (history) and learn moral philosophy, which ultimately leads him to the highest knowledge: knowing God. He had theoretical and practical knowledge, thanks to which he served the state and took over the function of a medieval knight, which the author illustrates with the example of Jan Zamoyski.
In the last part of her text, Kliszcz analyses the understanding of humanism in online encyclopaedias: multilingual versions of Wikipedia and the Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy. Most of them separate humanism understood as a universal philosophical worldview and as a Renaissance intellectual movement. In turn, Google search results confirm the link between humanism and humanitarian ideas. Currently, humanism emphasises interpersonal solidarity. Man is no longer defined in relation to other beings: inferior animals and a superior God....
W późniejszej twórczości Kasprowicza bunt ustąpił miejsca akceptacją świata i pokorą („franciszkanizm”).
Nowość stanowi motywacja buntu w wierszu Modlitwa Juliana Tuwima. Np. w Słowie o Jakubie Szeli Brunon Jasieński oskarża Chrystusa o stronniczość i wspieranie panów, jest to bunt o akcencie klasowym.
Wydarzenia II wojny światowej i Zagłada nadały szczególnego znaczenia problemom, nieobecności i milczenia Boga.
Andrea Ceccherelli, The Peripeteia of Freedom. Twentieth-Century Poetry towards God
At the root of humanist anthropocentrism is a religious discourse – the problem of human dignity was connected with human place in the plan of God's creation. The crisis of Renaissance optimism led to a paradox: true freedom is obedience to God. Another paradox is the abuse of freedom in the form of rebellion against God and the laws that govern creation. While early modern humanism did not allow such a rebellion, it laid the foundations for it by elevating freedom and reason. The essay aims to trace these two extreme forms of freedom towards God with their problems, limitations and transformations.
An example of metaphysical rebellion (denying the purposes of man and the world) and its most dramatic, sharpest expression are the hymns by Jan Kasprowicz from the cycle To the Perishing Wolrd (Ginącemu światu). The reason for this solidaristic rebellion is the silence of God against the suffering of humanity and the lack of approval for His consent. Such a rebellion is connected with transferring the problem of injustice to the metaphysical plane and, like Mickiewicz’s Konrad, challenging God. This attitude was the culmination of some of the tendencies characteristic of Young Poland. In Kasprowicz's later works, the rebellion gave way to acceptance of the world and humbleness (“Franciscanism”).
The novelty is the motive of rebellion in the poem Prayer (Modlitwa) by Julian Tuwim. It is an individualistic rebellion, consistent with the affirmation of life and the world. God appears as the embodiment of the world and life, while rebellion is hypothetical: it will break out when individual desires are not satisfied. This does not mean that the rebellion against God will end with Young Poland. For example, in his Word about Jakub Szela (Słowo o Jakubie Szeli) Bruno Jasieński accuses Christ of partiality and support for lords. The collective dimension of rebellion, together with the Romantic tradition, returned during World War II as a refusal to accept evil and suffering.
Rebellion resulting from God's freedom and silence in a spirit of deep faith finds another expression, represented for example by the poetry of Jan Twardowski. Job becomes an alternative to rebellious Prometheus, as in Anna Kamieńska’s poetry. In Jerzy Liebert faith has a more dynamic and dramatic dimension. Acceptance of the fate appears to be tragically desirable. Submission to God's will encounters obstacles.
The events of World War II and the Holocaust gave special significance to the absence and silence of God. The attitude of rebellion against God loses its validity, since its object ceases to exist: “God's death” is regarded as a fait accompli. Polar attitudes towards this problem are represented by Różewicz’s “problematic a-theism” (p. 514) and Miłosz’s “doubting, voluntaristic theism” (p. 515). The youthful creativity of the first of them expresses a loss of faith. Over time, an ungodly attitude becomes problematic. It implies the suffering and questioning of all European humanism (self-improvement is impossible in the face of "all-encompassing Nothing", p. 517), a complaint against Western civilisation. Różewicz's nihilism and atheism appear as loss, not freedom.
Miłosz similarly diagnoses the state of Western civilisation, it is only a starting point for him: “both God and man need to be defended” (p. 519). Miłosz is not able to accept the death of God, his constantly renewed theodicy on Gnostic tendencies is an expression of an attempt to save “God's morality”. It would be more appropriate to speak not about a rebellion against God, but about the world order and naturalistic reduction of man; affirmation of his values against anti-humanism....
Opiewają je Kochanowski, Rej, Kochowski, Zbylitowski, najpełniej zaś – Stanisław Herakliusz Lubomirski w Rozmowach Artaksesa i Ewandra.
Tworzyli go erudyci-filolodzy, którzy mieszkali w mieście, a marzyli ucieczce ku naturze, na wieś i tam umieszczali swe odpowiedniki, oddane poezji i miłości. Tradycję tę kontynuuje m.in. Szymonowic, zderzający pieśń miłosną i praktyczną pieśń pracy..
In the introduction, the author highlights the continuity of the bucolic tradition and its related genres from antiquity to Romanticism, together with its role in school teaching and the development of Italian humanism. Theocritus’ Idylls and Virgil’s Bucolics became a transmitter of various patterns of humanity and typical attitudes, established in the literature.
The homo felix motif is associated with the myths of the golden age and Sicily/Arcadia as a land of happiness and peace, which disappeared along with the development of civilisation and the corruption of humanity. The beginning of the tradition was given by Hesiod, which is recalled by Theocritus and Virgil, showing a rural shepherd enclave, untouched by evil, full of original simplicity, close to nature.
The homo contemplativus type is associated with the “idleness” of a bucolic shepherd who creates his poetry in loneliness and contemplates nature, soothing but also longing for infinity. In Petrarch, this is connected with religious reflection (otium religiosum), as in Sarbiewski. Pictures of the rural otium litteratum were associated with the pattern of a landowner nobleman. They are praised by Kochanowski, Rej, Kochowski, Zbylitowski, and most fully by Stanisław Herakliusz Lubomirski in his Dialogues of Artakses and Ewander (Rozmowy Artaksesa i Ewandra). Homo litteratus is derived from the Arcadian shepherd-poet-singer, eagerly participating in agons. Bucolic staffage often signals an autothematic statement. It is connected with the beginnings of the genre, full of autothematic and intertextual elements from the very beginning of its history. It was created by erudite-philologists who lived in the city and dreamed of escaping to nature, to the countryside and there they placed their counterparts, devoted to poetry and love. This tradition is continued by Szymonowic, a juxtaposing love song and a practical song of work.
Homo amans also comes from pastoral literature, often co-occurring with homo flebilis dying of love, or homo melancholicus. He loves subtly, shyly confesses his feelings, which usually causes him to fail. His love, flourishing in peace, is opposed to war. Nature is patronised by lovers, often contrasted with a bad culture, seen differently by the authors.
In Poland, the peak of interest in pastoral literature falls in the seventeenth century. The homo agricola model gained exceptional significance there. It was associated with the poetry of landowners, a native pastoral form, which was developed by Kochanowski. Although the poet appealed to both pastoral and agricultural idyll (in the spirit of Virgil’s Georgics), he gave priority to the latter, which was connected not only with the closeness of nature and peace but also with work and moderation. This model was contrasted with the ideal of the knight, defender of the homeland, celebrated in the epic....
Badaczka omawia poglądy uczestników debaty w Davos w 1929: Ernsta Cassirera, reprezentującego esencjalistyczny humanizm, i antyhumanistycznego Martina Heideggera.
The text is an attempt to answer the question of whether humanism is a timeless idea or strictly historical one and therefore exposed to the danger of anachronism. The author reflects on why humanism transformed from ideological identification into a negative point of reference.
The researcher discusses the views of participants in the Davos debate in 1929: Ernst Cassirer, representing essentialist humanism, and anti-humanist Martin Heidegger. Both sought the authenticity of humanity and freedom as its essence but understood it differently. For Cassirer, man is himself when he transcends himself and participates in culture, for Heidegger – when he gives up an illusory being and immerses himself in real, pure being.
The critical current dominated the humanist debate and radicalised itself; it was accompanied by neo-Marxism. Representatives of anti-humanism are interested in the subject as the centre of the idea of humanism: they prove the fictionality of the subject and negate the freedom that constitutes it. They emphasise the determinism of human being – like Louis Althusser. His thought was developed by Michel Foucault, who hesitates between extreme determinism and projects of human liberation.
His followers take a similar attitude from the trend of new historicism and cultural materialism, e.g. Stephen Greenblatt, whose texts can be paradoxically read as a defence of humanism. In turn, American post-humanists (including radical transhumanists) reject the concept of nature entirely. Any element of the world can be replaced – e.g. the construct of human can be replaced with post-human.
Jerome Binde recognises old humanism, looking for the essence of humanity, as segregating, while Heidegger’s humanism as the humanism of formation, associated with caring for himself and the world around, "building a home”. Michel Serres develops this thought in the spirit of ecocriticism: he replaces culture with an expanded concept of nature. His domestication philosophy is undertaken by Bruno Latour, who replaces Cassirer’s creation of culture with human-made transformation. He recalls Peter Sloterdijk, who considers traditional humanism as a technology for creating man – an anthropo-technology that segregates people.
In the last part of the text, the author discusses the Cassirer’s tradition. It was undertaken by Emmanuel Levinas, for whom humanity is the experience of meeting and responsibility for the freedom of the Other. Hans Blumenberg also inscribes in this trend with his metaphorology – man replaces animal instinct with the creation of metaphors, which means that his relationship with the world is always mediated....
Struggles with the Polish National Identity in the Czech Approaches to Polish Literature
Krystyna Kardynia-Pelikánova’s study is an analysis of Czech works devoted to Polish literature and their critical assessment. At the same time, the researcher is trying to draw partial conclusions about the reception of Polish literature in Czechia. The author notes that concepts such as Sarmatism, Messianism or Wallenrodism are not foreign to Czech researchers.
Czech studies on Polish literature appeared at the beginning of the nineteenth century, at first on Slavic literature in general. The author refers here to the History of Slavic language and literature by all vernaculars (1826) written in German by Pavel Jozef Šafařík (Geschichte der slawischen Sprache und Literatur nach allen Mundarten), and to the Slovanské literatury (1922, 1925, 1929) by Jan Máchal. Later works also sought to find a particular essence of Slavic literature, which was seen in fear of God. The first comprehensive study of Polish literature was the Dějiny polské literatury (1953) by a scholar of Slavic and Polish literature Karel Krejčí.
Kardynia-Pelikánova draws attention to the analogies found by Czech authors between Czech eras of the Reformation and national revival on the one part and Polish humanism and Enlightenment on the other. According to her, Czech Polonists often interpreted the products of Polish culture of that time through the prism of the Czech situation, seeking among Polish poets inspirations by Czech works.
The author analyses many Czech studies on Polish literature. She critically discusses the works of Ludvík Štěpán, noting the fact that he did not know other works devoted to the subjects he studied. In an inspiring way, she discusses the differences between the needs of Polish and Czech cultures resulting from their different political situation. As she writes: “in Poland, it was necessary to rebuild patriotism associated with the idea of their own state, in the Czech Republic – with the idea of the nation” (p. 381). Among the scholars interested in Juliusz Słowacki’s works, Kardynia-Pelikánova names Emanuel Masák, Karel Krejčí and Frank Wollman, who also studied mock-heroic motifs. The researcher also mentions Wallenrodism, the reception of which in Czechia was very diverse. It was most severely criticized by Ivan Franko, who accused it of “moral worthlessness and depravity” (p. 394)....
Interesuje go też zmiana znaczenia humanitas zależnie od okoliczności geograficznych, historycznych i innych.
Looking from a post-colonial perspective, the author asks about the role of humanism – of the Latin-Polish-Catholic-Western formation – as a tool of domination in shaping the identity of the early modern nations of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. He is also interested in changes in the meaning of humanitas depending on geographical and historical circumstances.
After discussing the objectives and scope of the study, the author explains the concepts he uses. Under the name “Ruthenia”, he understands the areas of former Kievan Rus’ incorporated into the Commonwealth. The name “Lithuania” refers to the multicultural Grand Duchy of Lithuania, not just the ethnic Lithuanians. The name “Pole” is ambiguous, referring to both the entire Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth and the Polish Crown. The researcher sees the humanist culture in the context of its impact on the functioning of the state and society, while the Latin tradition – a creation older than humanism – is contrasted with Byzantine-Greek tradition.
Next, the author presents a traditional description of the spread of humanitas and latinitas (treated here together) in Rus’, which took place after its conquest by Latin Poland and Latin Lithuania. Such narrative emphasises the positive aspects of this process and its civilisation role. The expansion of Latin was related to the Roman Church, and from the rule of King Alexander on – also with the state administration. At that time, the achievements of the humanistic culture were used; this culture – thanks to being rooted in one canon – unified ideas, created the basis for communication and facilitated the transmission of information so useful in governance. Apart from the Latin, Polish language was becoming more popular, which was supported by Lithuanian Calvinists. The centres of humanism were Vilnius, flourishing under the rule of King Sigismund August, and magnate courts, especially of the Radziwiłłs. Jesuit colleges (from 1569 on) and Catholicism greatly contributed to the promotion of Western humanistic culture, which displaced the cultural model provided so far by Orthodoxy (although humanist schools of this religion were founded in Rus’), further weakened by the Union of Brest. Latinitas united the state, and it was a path to social advancement and provided the Lithuanians with a new, attractive identity project.
In the next part of the text, the author criticises the current approach, which can be extremely interpreted as objective or biased. He distinguishes two stages of a discourse of domination: from the sixteenth to the eighteenth century, and from the nineteenth to the twentieth century. He points to six problems in its description: (1) the phenomenon of cultural interference – exposing one paradigm (here the Western one: inculcation of humanism) at the expense of another (Eastern one: the disappearance of Ruthenian culture); (2) the assumption of Eastern European cultural inferiority and the positive role of promoting Western culture; (3) the role of humanistic institutions in building a modern Lithuanian state and society – the displacement of the Ruthenian literacy model by Latin-Polish one; (4) a change of the Orthodox-Ruthenian culture under the pressure of Western humanitas (Occidentalisation); (5) building by humanism the foundations of the identity of the Lithuanians and Ruthenians who used the Polish language and myths referring to ancient Rome for self-determination; (6) Polishness of Latinitas in the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, in which Polish and Latin performed a similar function – they were the languages of the elite.
In the conclusions, the author indicates the possibility of looking at the problems presented from two perspectives: Polish towards the East (traditional) and Lithuanian-Ruthenian towards the West (as in the text). He also reflects on the reasons for the dominance of Polonocentric discourse and sees them in the claims of post-partition Polish culture....
Argument antropologiczny łączy się z „suwerennością rozpoznania własnej obecności w świecie, […] aktywizowaniem […] życiowej energii i pasji poznawczej, podkreśla wreszcie moment intensywnie przeżywanego […] własnego istnienia” (s. 455).
Dowodzą postawienia człowieka w centrum, jednoczesne przekroczenie i kontynuację renesansowej refleksji. Poznanie własnego wnętrza prowadzi do poczucia godności własnej.
Sięgał do renesansowych i oświeceniowych koncepcji. Podstawową przestrzenią egzystencji człowieka jest kultura: konstytuuje go i decyduje o człowieczeństwie.
Autorka sygnalizuje też problem argumentu antropologicznego w poezji XX w. Bolesław Leśmian, piewca sensualności istnienia, eksplorował całą skalę krańcowych doświadczeń człowieka, które „czyniły ludzką istotę równoprawnym towarzyszem samego Boga” (s. 488). Czesław Miłosz z kolei łączył zachwyt nad światem z refleksją nad sumieniem. Eksplorowanie moralnych konfliktów, konstytuujących człowieczeństwo, łączy go z Mickiewiczem i pokazuje konfrontację pól semantycznych humanitas i christianitas.
Konflikty moralne, sumienia i wartości prowadzą do pogłębiania samowiedzy i suwerenności jednostki. Bernadetta Kuczera-Chachulska, “I Am Also Though I Am Through You”. Anthropological Argument in Poetic Conversations with God in the Poetry of the Nineteenth and Twentieth Centuries
The anthropological argument is combined with “the sovereignty of recognising one's presence in the world, […] activating […] of life energy and cognitive passion, and finally emphasises the moment of intensely lived […] own existence” (p. 455). The starting point of the present reflections is the apparent paradox in the work of the Romantics: a break with tradition, also that of the Renaissance, coincides with the problematisation of the image of man shaped precisely in this epoch, man recognising his presence in the world and endowed with dignity, striving for self-creation and perfection.
The humanistic image of man is represented by Adam Mickiewicz’s work, approached in a synthetic way. Man is dynamic, transforms himself and strives for his integrity. Undertaking dilemmas of human conscience, moral conflicts and discovering his dark interior are Mickiewicz’s attempts to recognise human nature. Man was placed in the centre, simultaneously going beyond and continuing the Renaissance reflection. Getting to know one’s own interior leads to the sense of one’s dignity. Mickiewicz considers the relationship between God and man, his presence in the plan of salvation, and at the same time the rooting of man in the community, crucial to his anthropology.
Cyprian Kamil Norwid distanced himself from the Romanticism. He reached for Renaissance and Enlightenment concepts. He sees man as responsible for individual development, beyond national responsibilities. Culture is the basic space of human existence: it constitutes it and decides about his humanity. In his works, there is the tension between the necessity of surrender to the Infinite and opposition to it resulting from the experience of the world and body, compassion and mercy. The poet recognises the complete space of human activity and connects it with the divine reality; he also devotes a lot of space to the important problems of fine arts. His anthropological project appears to be modern, complete, accounting for internal experience and the biological and social condition of man.
Kuczera-Chachulska also signals the problem of anthropological argument in twenty-century poetry. Bolesław Leśmian, the advocate of the sensuality of existence, explored the whole scale of human extreme experiences which “made a human being an equal companion of God himself” (p. 488). In turn, Czesław Miłosz combined admiration for the world with reflection on conscience. The exploration of moral conflicts constituting humanity connects him with Mickiewicz and shows the confrontation of semantic fields of humanitas and christianitas. Attempts to recognise an “anthropological essence” (p. 489) reveal the dramatic nature of the conflict between individual experience of existence and “boundless history”. In poems written at the beginning of the twenty-first century, this dichotomy was overcome. The need to praise God in the poem Sanctificetur brings to mind Jan Kochanowski’s hymn What do you want from us Lord (Czego chcesz od nas Panie). The essay ends with an analysis of the poetry of Janusz Stanisław Pasierb, who addressed the discussed problems in an original way. The author with contrariness and subtle perversity recognised the integrity of man, based on spiritual complexity and the effort to live.
Analyses prove that the recognition of personality of man does not have to lead to rebellion or negation. Moral conflicts, conscience and values lead to deepening self-knowledge and the sovereignty of the individual. Although these problems have been taken from the beginning of modern humanism, they were revealed with full strength and clarity in Romantic literature due to its shift towards individual existence....
W pierwszej części artykułu autor omawia fenomen humanizmu północnego, wypadkowej tradycji włoskiej oraz lokalnej, wyrosłej z pobożności devotio moderna i mitu barbaricum.
W drugiej części tekstu autor opisuje erazmiański model edukacji i antropologii.
Trzecią część badacz poświęcił sporowi o monoimitację Cycerona, pozwalającemu wyróżnić humanizm chrześcijański i ten ograniczony do studiów filologicznych.
Miała służyć powrotowi do źródeł wiary, zawartych w Piśmie Świętym, i odrodzeniu chrześcijaństwa, które Rotterdamczyk chciał zreformować i zbliżyć ku ideałowi filozofii Chrystusowej wyrażonej w Ewangeliach.
